At Springfield, we understand that starting school is an important and exciting step in every child’s life. We work hard to ensure that children and their families settle into school life as quickly as possible and can start enjoying the process of making new friends and learning new skills.
Communication with parents and carers is an important part of the settling in process and you will be encouraged to use Tapestry, our online learning journal, to find out and share information about your child. You will also be invited in to meet your child’s class teacher during the first half term and will receive regular feedback via their Springfield home communication book, which each child brings home each day.
In Reception, your child will follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. This sets the standards for the learning, development and care of your child.
Your child’s learning in Reception will be organised into three main areas of development:
And four specific areas of learning:
Play will form an important part of your child’s time in Reception, with much of the learning being introduced through structured play and some adult-led activities. As the year progresses, the learning will become a little more formal in preparation for Year 1.
During Reception, your child will be taught to read using Phonics, an approach to reading that focuses on building words using sounds. At this age, your child will also be introduced to numbers, counting and some simple sums.
You can find out more about our Phonics programme, Read Write Inc. by looking at this RWI PowerPoint presentation which will also show you how you can support your child’s learning at home.
