Year 1

Here is our Meet the Teacher presentation.

Moving from Reception to Year 1 can feel like a big step for children and parents, but at Springfield we will make sure the transition is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

There is still a large focus on learning through play in Year 1, but the school days will become a little more structured and this year will see the first steps into the National Curriculum.

Following on from their learning in Reception, phonics will play a big part in Year 1 and children will continue to have phonics sessions each day. They will become more confident with reading and writing and will be introduced to some trickier words and spelling rules.

In Year 1, children will learn to count forwards and backwards from 100 and learn a wider range of addition and subtraction facts as well as start being introduced to multiplication and division.

Creativity is one of our core values at Springfield and we use a variety of fun topics and activities to start exploring elements of science, geography and history as the year progresses.

As well as learning, there will continue to be a focus on further developing social skills and independence. The days will be varied and busy, but also a lot of fun!

What we’re learning this term

Take a look at what we’re learning about this term and the activities your child will be taking part in.

Science

Materials

We had had Ali from STEM Innovation come in to work us. We learnt that STEM stood for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Ali gave us a challenge to build a tower out of ice cubes in our teams! The top tip was to use salt and try and keep the ice cubes dry. He also showed us a robot that can be coded to do tricks!

Maths- Days of the Week

We have been learning the days of the week and learning these songs to help us remember them.

Here is a song to help you with counting to 50.

As an extra challenge, try counting back from 100 with this song!

Maths- Number Bonds

We have been practising our addition and subtraction skills. Learning number bonds can help children develop an understanding of the mathematical relationship between numbers, number bonds are pairs of numbers that total an amount e.g. 10. We are learning a song to help us remember the bonds to 10 and Save the Whale is also a great game to help us practise.

Writing Meeting

Thank you to everyone that was able to make it to our Year 1 writing meeting. Please find the Power point presentation from the meeting below.

Here is a game for you to practise using your full stops!

Red Word Cards

We have been busy learning our Red Words in Year 1. Here is a list of all the words to help you practise at home.
