Fantastic News!

We have some fantastic news at Springfield! We are delighted to share with you that we have been awarded an accreditation as the first Asthma Friendly School in Sussex.

We as a team, feel extremely proud to be recognised for our dedication in making sure that any child who comes to Springfield with asthma, is given the highest level of care.

This ensures that children with asthma in school have their asthma managed to a high standard and do not miss out on their learning, or have days absent from school because of their asthma.

We are an Asthma Friendly School

We are a Sussex Asthma Friendly School. This means we take a proactive approach to supporting children and young people to manage their symptoms so they do not miss out on physical activity during the school day, or have to take time off from school altogether.

Around 10 per cent of children in the UK have asthma. Making simple changes makes a big difference to a person’s experience of asthma, both at home and at school.

Sussex Health and Care Website have reported on Springfield’s award saying- Springfield Infant School and Nursery in Worthing has been presented with the first Asthma Friendly School award in Sussex.

This Sussex-based accreditation aims to encourage, educate and support schools to be proactive at managing asthma at their school and upskill all their staff with training and awareness sessions.

The new NHS Sussex Asthma Friendly Schools initiative aims to equip schools to care for any child or young person who has asthma during the school day. Making simple changes makes a big difference to a person’s experience of asthma, both at home and at school. This work is part of the National Bundle of Care for Children and Young People with Asthma launched by NHS England in 2021 and is being rolled out UK wide.

To become an Asthma Friendly School, schools must have:

  • a register and management plan for all children with asthma;
  • a named lead for asthma;
  • the correct policies in place;
  • and a system for identifying children who are missing school because of their asthma or who are not partaking in sports or other activities due to their asthma.

The school must also show that their staff have undertaken additional training in asthma awareness and management.

Springfield Infant School and Nursery in Worthing has become the first school in Sussex to complete this.
